Everyone knows what Karaoke is and most all people have sung karaoke either in a karaoke bar or at home with their own system or a friends or neighbors system. So where does the word “karaoke” come from? Well, it is from two Japanese words. The first is “kara” meaning empty, and the second is “okesutora” meaning orchestra. There’s been controversy about exactly where it was first developed, but it is believed that the Japanese developed it in the 1970’s before it spread to Asia in the 1980’s and then to the rest of the world. The popularity for karaoke didn’t hit the U.S. until the 1990’s. It then became a popular form of entertainment in nightclubs and such. Karaoke dance clubs became exclusive to karaoke and ended up with high tech karaoke equipment along with light shows for the dance floor.

You could even rent a karaoke machine with a jockey to perform at your own private parties and functions. Even though it seemed to be a passing fad, it has become quite the opposite with smaller machines becoming available to the public at large. Now it has become a household form of entertainment and is perfect for family fun night, Christmas parties, birthday parties, you name it. Who can resist coming up to the mic to perform their favorite rock and roll song?
